Share Investor Portfolio: Value @ 5 December 2011

The Share Investor Portfolio was up over the last week. In the first week of December the portfolio was up considerably, by 2.78% or $7308.02 on the November 28 update .
The biggest contributor to the rise was SKC with a 14c increase while most other stocks had small gains.
For the first 47 weeks of 2011 the portfolio has increased by 7.79% or $19103.93.
The total of unspent dividends and interest in the bank as at 26 Nov 2011 from the 2010 - 2011 earnings years is $32,398.33 at close of reporting season for 2010 and near the end of the 2011 2nd half reporting year. There are also approx $60000.00 in tax credits earned from the portfolio since it began in late 2002.

The Share Investor Portfolio has increased in value by 13.35% or $35255.74 since I began tracking it for this blog on October 11 2010

Share Investor Portfolio 2: Value @ 5 December 2011

The Share Investor 2 Portfolio is a separate portfolio apart from the original Share Investor Portfolio and contains just one share, Contact Energy Ltd [CEN.NZX]. It will only have this one share in it and has a far shorter time frame than the original long-term portfolio that I started 8 years ago.

The portfolio was started July 7 with 9000 shares purchased at $5.34 at a total cost of $48,060.00 and $144.18 in brokerage.

After the 150th day of trading the portfolio was up sharply in the first week of December by $3600.00 or 7.66% - its biggest ever rise - on the November 28 update to be worth a total of $50,850.00.

The portfolio is up by 8.23% since tracking began on July 7 2011.

NB - This portfolio will be tracked monthly after this issue.

Share Price Alert: Mainfreight Ltd 3

Mainfreight Ltd [MFT.NZX] had a great 2012 first half result announced at the beginning of November and since then the share price has rallied from around $9.75 to close at $10.48 yesterday - a rise of just over 7%.

The share price has rallied from $7.25 12 months ago and touched an all-time high of $10.75 in August and at yesterday's closing price gives this stock a rise of well over 40% in a market that has been flatish.

The thing is, as good as the November result is and indications from management that things are looking good for the next quarter, the share price really has gotten away from the realities of the short to medium term prospects for the company.

While the company is doing well right now the European banking crises and the fallout from that cannot be discounted and new investors in Mainfreight, in my humble and not so humble opinion have not factored this in.

International trade is likely to be impacted from the Euro situation, how badly we don't know, but this will clearly have an impact on logistics operators like MFT and their recent acquisition of European logistics company Wim Bosman Group will probably be the hardest hit.

I must add that the company is the best run NZX listed company in New Zealand and has done well to manage through the last 3 years of economic turmoil but the share price is well over valued and will pull back at some stage.

I am contemplating selling my holding for a good 120% plus gain over 4 years and buying back at a latter stage.

Watch for a pull-back to below 6 bucks on an international trade slow-down.
