Auckland Airport: Look Before You Leap

AIA 30 day price history

Auckland International Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX] has a dividend coming of 10.5c fully imputed at the company tax rate of 28% and due to those on the register at close of biz on the 6th October 2017.

Can you get this dividend and protect your capital base at the same time.

No, is the answer but you stand an almost unique chance of getting the Div plus capital gains anyway.

That has been my experience over the years of trading this baby in and out of lulls, bulls, bears any any other term you care to mention.

I currently own 2000 shares based on just this and have done for 3 reporting periods.

So if your game and really want to have a go get in now. At sub 7 bucks this one has 7 plus bucks written all over it before the Oct 6 cut off.

Weather you sell into the share price increase or stay around and collect the Div you cant lose either way.

I, if I had money, I would buy today.

AIA: To Buy Now Or Not To?

Airport_Low

Would you buy Auckland Airport shares right now?

That is a very good question considering the first half profit will be announced next month you would have to say leave it to the other side of this announcement.

You would also have to say what about China whats it doing?

Well as far as the announcement is concerned that is going to be a good one for share holders - north of $80 mill for the half and that is more than likely going to boost the share price to past $6.

So the second question is worth looking at because it is a good one.

Is it worth waiting until the shite hits China then buy up or risk the share going up in price.

I bought my shares at 1.70, 1.50 and - 1.90, I think. I bought the during the depths of the great recession and they have turned out to be by best investment.

They have returned over 600% and my only regret is that I didn't buy 40,000.

SO, what are they going to do?

Well I can give you two pieces of advice because you are the one putting money on the line.

You can buy now with the inevitability that you are going to see similar returns (over 600%) or be patient (or if you think the China thing is another bubble you wont have to wait long) and wait it out till the stock-market has a correction (its not overvalued if you compare the income your getting from stocks to interest from the bank/having an investment house but long term it is overvalued on P.E ratios and a number of other financial ratios. )

I going to stay shtuck (my google dictionary says that is not a word)on this for now and let you decide.

Whatever your decision it will be interesting.

Share Price Alert: Auckland International Airport Ltd

Auckland International Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX] has been marking time in terms of share price over the previous 12 months but since November 25 2011 has climbed 9% from $2.28 at that date to finish trading at $2.49 at close of business last Friday.

Its 2011 Full Year profit of 120.8 million was up 15% on the same period a year earlier and its prospects for 2012 look promising.

This near monopoly utility is paying a dividend of slightly under 5% at the current share price so beats the street in terms of your bank deposit.

One of the main reasons why I have included AIA in its first Share Price Alert though is that there has been speculation over the weekend that a suitor could be on the blocks for part of the company.

The rise of the share price in the last 6 weeks could be explained by those closer to the speculation knowing more than I and buying because the market has been relatively flat for most stocks.

Any possible bid would be well north of 3 bucks so those with an appetite for a little risk might want to get in early this morning and put your bids in.

Queenstown Airport: Queenstown Airport Update

If you have been following the issues closely surrounding Auckland International Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX] and their purchase of a 24.99% stake in Queenstown Airport you will probably already know that a couple of significant pieces of news have been released on this matter over the last week or so.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), through council owned subsidary Queenstown Airport Ltd, initially gave the green light for the deal last year and members on council are now opposing it and have completed a comprehensive 76 page report on it and have come to various conclusions as only a long winded ratepayer funded report can.

Their main point seems to be that Auckland Airport paid too much for their shareholding:

Page 41 of the report finds that the price paid by AIA for the first tranche shares (24.99%) was $6.91 per share:
“This incorporates a discount of approximately 7.5% on the value of 100% of the shares assessed by QAC and AIAL at that time of $7.47 per share. This discount is relatively low (and the price per share relatively high) for non-controlling, albeit large shareholding and may, arguably, have included a ‘strategic premium’ to gain a cornerstone stake.” – PricewaterhouseCoopers.
This is something I agree with, they did in the short term but perhaps not over the long-term as there have already been some good gains on the balance sheet for AIA.

The disclosure in this report that AIA has paid a significant premium to the present day value of the company surely runs counter to the council's opposition to the AIA/Queenstown ports arrangement? The Queenstown Airport and by default the council (which majority owns the airport) got good value for the 24.99% stake and for Queenstown ratepayers and they should be given a pat on the back for extracting every last cent out of AIA that they have. This clearly should bode well for AIA in court proceedings brought against AIA by QLDC/Queenstown Community Strategic Assets Group (QCSAG) and Air New Zealand Ltd [AIR.NZX].

There has also been an agreement by both Queenstown Airport and AIA that the option to by a further stake up to 35% is going to be given the bullet:

“On one hand Queenstown Airport could have received further cash of between $11 million and $21 million, of which the community could have received a sizable portion (around $10 million) as a dividend. On the other hand if Council ownership fell below 75% it would no longer have control of the constitution,” Ms Lawson said.
In the event that the Council’s shareholding fell below 75% page 38 of the report stated:
“It will no longer have control of the constitution, be able to pass special resolutions and pass ordinary resolutions without a meeting of shareholders. It will still have in excess of 50% of the ordinary shares and so will be able to pass ordinary resolutions and control the composition of the Board. However moving below 75% will diminish the control the Council can exercise over the Company.” – PricewaterhouseCoopers.
This important development pretty much removes any opposition to the deal where AIA has a 24.99% stake, clearly still has some board influence but will not attain a sizable controlling stake in the business, points which the local council, local business people and Air NZ have issues about.

The latest developments pretty much put Queenstown Airport in the box seat as far as their partnership with AIA goes. They have a cornerstone shareholder that has allowed them to release much needed capital back onto the balance sheet and they can also use the expertise, management and size of Auckland Airport to leverage growth for the Queenstown Port.

Lets be clear though, it will be mutually beneficial for both partners but Queenstown Airport is in the box seat and will make its business decisions as it sees fit.

The High Court Judicial Review latter on this year on the port deal looks tenuous for the proponents.

Share Investor Q & A: Reader Questions to Auckland Airport CEO Simon Moutter

I have given up for the time being on getting Michael Hill for a Share Investor Q & A - its a long story - but have managed to jack up a good one today with Auckland International Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX] CEO Simon Moutter.

Auckland Airport is a company with an asset that is known by most New Zealanders who have traveled and we are all aware that it is an expensive place to shop, park and fly. It has also been a great investment for long term shareholders since it listed nearly 13 years ago.

Over the last few years though the company has stalled in profit growth due to a downturn in world travel and some high expense capital requirements to modernise and expand the business.

It looks set for some good gains over the next few years however.

AIA has been headed by Simon Moutter since 2008 but he is a relatively low profile individual.

What do we know of his plans for the Airport he heads, where does he intend to take the company into the future and what makes this CEO tick?

With that in mind I thought I would like my readers to put some questions to Simon for a Share Investor Q & A.

Please leave your questions here at the bottom of this post or email me here.

Queenstown Aiport Case: Air New Zealand VS Auckland Airport

On news that Auckland Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX] have secured a deal for China Southern Airlines to begin flights between Guangzhou and Auckland starting in March because of Auckland Airport's deal with Queenstown Airport at the end of 2010, we must revisit Air New Zealand Ltd [AIR.NZX] opposition to the marriage between Queenstown and Auckland Airports, especially in the light of the recent purchase by AIR of nearly 15% of Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd [VBA.ASX] last week.

Air New Zealand's Rob Fyfe and Bruce Parton last year indicated his airlines opposition to the AIA/Queenstown merger was because of their monopoly status and the "anti-competitive" nature of the company the port already had and the purchase of 27.7% of Queenstown Airport would cement that monopoly.

There are also several businessmen in Queenstown in opposition to the merger and factions within the Queenstown Council, who own the majority of the Queenstown port.

Apart from the clear benefits that the Chinese Airline will have on the New Zealand economy, benefits that I initially was dubious about last year when the deal was announced, the added revenue for AIA is going to be good for shareholders, especially as this route looks like it will develop further over the long term.

For Air New Zealand to continue their case in the Christchurch High Court is to be guilty of hypocrisy of the highest order.

While you may agree that Auckland Airport has a monopoly - it indeed does and that is why I am a shareholder, AIA's purchase of Virgin Blue is pretty much the same deal as engineered by AIA/Queenstown and also cements, for AIR, a history of anti competitive behavior in the Airline business in this part of the world and specifically the stranglehold they have on flights into the booming Queenstown tourism sector.

For them it is about protectionism of their near monopoly in Queentown and the benefits this has on their routes out of that port and Auckland Airport as well.

In effect they are attempting to do the same as Auckland Airport.

Don't expect AIA to take a court case against AIR though.

You wouldn't expect less from a quasi Govt Department though with taxpayer dollars bankrolling them.

Make me an offer I cant refuse: Auckland International Airport Ltd

I know my entry price for shares in the Share Investor Portfolio but what price do I sell that share for if I was made an offer today?

I have been thinking about this over the last week or so, so in the first of a series of 17 installments - the number of companies in the portfolio - I am going to discuss what my sell price might be and why.

Please keep in mind that most of the portfolio I don't intend to sell anytime soon, if at all, but if I was offered a predetermined price right now I would sell if that price met my future expectations of financial performance for the company. The offer would have to take into account the prospects for the company in the long term and the possibility I may not be able to do better return wise were I to use the proceeds of a sale to purchase another investment. My investment outlook is 10 years plus.

Many of you are going to be completely blown away by the price I put on my investments but this is only my opinion so don't shoot me without thinking your response through first.

The first stock I wish to cover off is Auckland International Airport Ltd [AIA.NZX]. This stock has performed well for me and has returned around 50% thus far when dividends, capital increase and tax credits are factored in. 1000 AIA shares were first purchased in 2006 and then 4000 in 2009. 304 shares were bought in 2009 at $1.65 as part of a capital raising.

A great little earner so far!

The main reason I bought this company is its status as a near monopoly in a fast growing sector that is protected by the capital outlay and political problems that another port competitor would face, so it has a great little competitive moat around it.

Just to show my readers what value I put on it, I did not sell the stock when the Canadian Pension Plan came calling a few years back and offered around $4.64 for a stake in the company.

My long term view of this particular company puts a far higher value on it.

Profit has been stagnant for the last few years but if historical growth continues long term investors in AIA will be rewarded.

For these reasons $10 plus per share would get me to part with my beloved AIA shares today.
