Share Investor Portfolio: Value @ 8 March 2011

The Share Investor Portfolio rose strongly in the first week of March. The portfolio was up 2.15% or $5830.68 on the Feb 28 update . For the first 9 weeks of 2011 the portfolio has increased by 4.52% or $11584.61. This weeks rise was due, primarily, to a 19c rise in SKC, along with quake related rises of 18c per share for FBU and 6c for STU. This was offset by reasonable falls in PPL, 11c down on a poor profit result and an overall weakness in all retail stocks.

There has also been a profit result that has added cash dividends to the portfolio and interest earned on dividends in the bank.

The total of unspent dividends and interest in the bank from the 2010 - 2011 earnings years is $20834.21 at close of reporting season for 2010 and partway through the 2011 year. There are also approx $50000.00 in tax credits earned from the portfolio since it began in late 2002.

Share Price Alert: The Warehouse Group Ltd

The Warehouse Group Ltd [WHS.NZX] like most other listed retailers, is on sale at the moment. The Warehouse stock has lost almost 12% in value since December 2010, around 8% of that loss over February alone, to close at $3.38 today.

Much of that loss has been due to a negative trading update in early January but the share price has come under pressure over the last 2 weeks as post Christchurch Earthquake 12 stores in that region will have compromised sales for some time and two stores will be shut indefinately because of structural damage.

There is also the prospect of lacklustre trading for at least another year as the New Zealand economy continues to bite hard on retailers of all persuasions.

Having said that the company is paying a rather attractive gross dividend of over 13%, with a net dividend of greater than 15c per share coming up post the March 12 profit announcement.

The prospect of another CEO taking over from Ian Morrice in the latter part of 2011 and changing the current flagging fortunes of the company is a possible bright spot on an otherwise darkish medium term horizon.

The current share price is 8c off a 52 week low of $3.30 and over the last year the stock has rallied from these levels 3 times so a short term gain could be nade as well as a relative bargain for long term investors like me.

Buy on further weakness. I will be looking

Share Price Alert: Pumpkin Patch Ltd 2

Pumpkin Patch Ltd [PPL.NZX] shares really got another good arse caning yesterday when its share price dropped another 6c to close at a 52 week low of $1.31.

The principle reason for this was a net profit result out yesterday that was down 44% on last years result.

Of course the market knew of this back in January when a profit downgrade was announced to the market so the result seemed to be a surprise to some.

PPL shares have lost approx 30c this year so far and since and since an April 2010 high of $2.30 they have shed more than 40% of their value.

This presents an opportunity to buy PPL on the cheapish side.

I would be patient though, because management don't seem very clear about the future of the company (commentary in the profit release was confusing to me) and its trading proposition over the calendar year and further pressure is likely to come over the rest of 2011 as people close their wallets and head for cheaper less brand oriented fare.

This will not last however, PPL is a good brand and once the economy gets going again - whenever that is - we will see this company doing better as mums start to look for brands again.

Be patient and look for further weakness to buy.
