Mainfreight: $100 dollars and up

Mainfreight just had a recent profit upgrade of 23% this week with a promise of more to come.

When it reached $24 intra-day briefly back in March it pretty much never looked back and has climbed ever since to touch an all-time high of $53.90c.

The big buying was back in Feb by Fisher Funds then again when it plumbed the depths in March. So you must take that on board when considering any purchases of this stock. It has gone up on relatively little stock - one or two million most days with sort of pepper potting of $5-6m of turnover.

But things are a foot. Management is pleased with the results getting new clients and seemingly thriving in this covid period when others have wilted. I would expect nothing else. AND question management if things were to flatten off BUT it hasn't.

So i will make a prediction. I expect to reach that $100 a share mark in around about 5 years with around $6B in revenues.

In between times I expect the stock to come off the boil soon AND that's when to buy. Perhaps next year when we are kinda going to have to face the facts that we - New Zealand Inc - are well and truly ....ed and the markets will start rocking again.

Until then DYOR and careful out there, there is only one of YOU.

VIDEO: Don Braid with Paul Holmes on the Economy

Image result for don braid

Q&A Interview

Paul Holmes discusses the economy with Mainfreight Ltd [MFT.NZ] managing director Don Braid,

Far North Mayor Wayne Brown and Economist Shamabil Yarkob today on Q & A.

Focus on what Don Braid says about the economy. His experience is that it is growing from exporting and his own company has grown in the last quarter, mainly from poaching market share off competitors.

He emphasizes that businesses that are surviving the current recession have done so by cutting back business fat: employees, removing poor business practices, economising where possible and that growth for New Zealand is going to be long and hard - something I have been saying for the last two years.

Don quoted this statistic:

From 2004 - 2010 the Public Admin and safety sector increased employment by 20% while the manufacturing, transport and warehousing sector dropped by the same amount.

Too many bureaucrats got us into this recession in the first place and we need to strangle off the clipboard carriers so we can grow businesses and the economy.

I interviewed Don late last year and he is very forthright and straight up with his answers. No bullshit and no bluster.

His take on the economy now and over the coming years I believe is an accurate place on where we are at present.

Mainfreight Ltd: Full Year 2010 Profit Analysis

Mainfreight Ltd [MFT.NZ] has had a very good 2010 full year profit result considering the state of the world economy and the subsequent slow down in world trade. The result is up 2.5% on the 2009 full year announcement.

Key Points

1. Total revenue (sales) decreased by 10.5% to $1.13 billion, from $1.26 billion last year

2. A net surplus after taxation and abnormals of $36.37 million for the twelve months of the 2010 financial year; an increase of 2.5% on the previous year’s result of $35.48 million.

3. Second half of year up more than 11% in revenue indicating a possible return to growth.

4. A big focus on cutting operating costs over the period of downturn in the business/economy, with more than $32 million cut.

5. A huge decline in North American revenues of nearly 25% in the first half but importantly showing signs of a recovery in the second half.

6. Australian operations steady.

7. New Zealand operations down in first half but improving in second.

8. Asian business under intense competitive pressure.

9. Cashflow down.

10. Debt decreased significantly from $115.28 million to $80 million.

Management have done well to come in with a higher full year profit. They did this by cutting back fat in the business and delaying capital expenditure and that is a testament to how responsive management are to trading conditions for them and the economic situation. Other listed NZX companies have continued to operate without these sort of economy measures and shareholders are paying the price.

Mainfreight have indicated to the market that while business for them is improving, any improvement could be tentative at best given the continuation of global economic problems and problems in Europe and elsewhere with high state debt levels.

I have to concur with these sentiments and I see any - if there is to be growth - short to medium term growth for Mainfreight that it comes for reasons of market share protection and that will impact on margins and therefore profit.

Hopefully that means there will be more expenditure cuts until the economic slowdown is a real one (the current "rebound" could be fueled by more State funded debt through stimulus packages) and sustainable growth and increased margins will once again be the order of the day for Mainfreight.

9 out of 10.

Chart of the Week: Mainfreight Ltd

The aim of this series of charts is to show the divergence - up or down - of the selected individual stock price away from the NZX 50 Index. The chart is a 1 year look to give some relevant background to any recent (two to three months) share price movements.

Mainfreight Ltd [MFT.NZ] has had a poor last year share price wise and 2010 result wise.

Over the last two months though the stock has risen from around $5.75 to close at $6.61 at close of market last Friday. The NZX by comparison has been almost flat.

If you were a chartist you would say this stock has been over bought and is ready for a correction.

Just on fundamentals alone the company is a growth stock and it aint growing at present -that could all change of course.

The time for buying this stock was of course at lower prices, as I did last year at $4.20 but it looks like the market sees this company in recovery. If you dont and want to buy MFT the chart says you should wait for a pull back.
