Chart of the Week: New Zealand Stock Exchange Ltd

The aim of this series of charts is to show the divergence - up or down - of the selected individual stock price away from the NZX 50 Index. The chart is a 1 year look to give some relevant background to any recent (two to three months) share price movements.

I will look at The New Zealand Stock Exchange Ltd [NZX.NZ] this week. I have included it as a chart of the week is because of the spectacular drop in shareprice over the last 3 months - almost 25% - and a big drop of 12% over June, where it has gone from $1.65 to trade today at an 52 week low of $1.46 last Friday at market close.

The company isn't being well managed, with poor regulatory restraint and tainted by a high level of insider trading and the share price reflects that but if you were thinking of buying NZX shares now would be the time to put it on your watchlist.

The NZX average of all indexes has been up by 5% over the last 3 months and by comparison NZX shares have dropped 25% below April's NZX average.

Buy on further weakness - today could see a good drop due to further weakness in the DOW.

Chart of the Week: The Warehouse Group Ltd

The aim of this series of charts is to show the divergence - up or down - of the selected individual stock price away from the NZX 50 Index. The chart is a 1 year look to give some relevant background to any recent (two to three months) share price movements.

I will look at The Warehouse Group Ltd [WHS.NZ] even though it seems to have mirrored the NZX 50 Gross Index somewhat. The reason I have included it as a chart of the week is because of the big drop in shareprice over the last 3 months and a spectacular drop over the last week, where it has gone from $3.60 to trade today at an intraday low of $3.30.

I think the share is worth looking at but I think be patient as the price will go lower as the NZX drops because of the global economic uncertainty (which has always been there by the way but only secretly acknowleged by some)

Be patient and you could get this stock below 3 bucks.

Chart of the Week: New Zealand Refining Ltd

Chart forNew Zealand Refining Co Ltd (NZR.NZ)

The aim of this series of charts is to show the divergence - up or down - of the selected individual stock price away from the NZX 50 Index. The chart is a 1 year look to give some relevant background to any recent (two to three months) share price movements.

New Zealand Refining Ltd [NZR.NZ] has had a poor last year share price wise and 2009 half year result.

Over the last two months though the stock has dropped from around $3.80 to close at $3.10 at close of market last Friday. The NZX by comparison has been almost flat.

The current NZR share price is at a 52 week low after being at a high of $7.65 over the same period

If you were a chartist you would say this stock has been over-sold and is ready for a correction.

The company has been affected in the short term by lower refining margins, increased capital expenditure and a suspension of the dividend. This is unlikely to continue for the long-term and the first sign of a resumption in dividend is likely to see this stock surge in price.

Significantly the stock has a $1.92 per share asset backing.

Buy on further weakness or at present levels.

Chart of the Week: Mainfreight Ltd

The aim of this series of charts is to show the divergence - up or down - of the selected individual stock price away from the NZX 50 Index. The chart is a 1 year look to give some relevant background to any recent (two to three months) share price movements.

Mainfreight Ltd [MFT.NZ] has had a poor last year share price wise and 2010 result wise.

Over the last two months though the stock has risen from around $5.75 to close at $6.61 at close of market last Friday. The NZX by comparison has been almost flat.

If you were a chartist you would say this stock has been over bought and is ready for a correction.

Just on fundamentals alone the company is a growth stock and it aint growing at present -that could all change of course.

The time for buying this stock was of course at lower prices, as I did last year at $4.20 but it looks like the market sees this company in recovery. If you dont and want to buy MFT the chart says you should wait for a pull back.

Disclosure: I own MFT shares in the Share Investor Portfolio.
