I originally wrote the piece below for the Share Investor Blog but after a couple of ignorant comments from some angry loser knuckle dragging hippie lefties, it is clear the politics of it all simply went over my head, so I posted it here with some additional comments just to clear up a few things.

How can you say the current problems are the fault of the Labour govt, what a load of balls!
NZ is but a tiny tiny fish in the world ocean. We are at the mercy of much bigger and greedier economies than ours and don't forget for a moment it is people like John Key and his ilk that have plunged the world into the mess that we are all now in! Investment bankers !

...and you are celebrating?

I agree, whatever we do ( or don't do) doesn't matter a damn in the current economic climate. We are ruled by the rest of the world.  

The fallacy that Michael Cullen's tax and spend policies didn't cause the current recession and a number of other economic problems is just that, a fallacy-we have been in a recession for more than 6 months.

John Key and his "ilk" were only part of a much larger group of reasons why the world is experiencing a global financial crises. Bill Clinton's Democrat Party's relaxing of lending criteria through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the 1990s that allowed those two government backed institutions to lend money to those that couldn't afford to pay it back was the spark that lit the fire and of course the knuckle draggers that borrowed it in the first place were the main culprits.

The wide boys of finance simply went along for the ride-where there is government backed lending there are always financial vultures.

But wait theres more!

If you think New Zealand has seen the worst of its economic slowdown think again.

Currently New Zealand is suffering a recession brought on by profligate spending by our previous Finance Minister, Michael Cullen. Problems related to the credit squeeze have only just started to hit us and will reach their worst probably sometime mid 2009.

Some of the symptoms of the outgoing Labour Governments spending so far are; higher inflation, rising unemployment, a massive public deficit, lower spending on every level of consumer goods, high interest rates, low productivity, lower property prices, higher mortgage defaults and business failures, amongst other things.

These factors are set to get worse as we move into the New Year, save the higher interest rates, and clearly this is going to have a highly negative effect on the New Zealand stockmarket.

With the current NZX index at 2800, it is likely to go below 2000 points before it starts to get any better, probably towards the end of 2009 to early 2010.

Of course all the finer points of timing for recovery and or a worsening of the scenario outlined above hinge on what responses John Key's new Government makes to the current recession and whether it looms for longer or deeper.

The economic situation for our trading partners is also an important factor for any export led recovery and obviously the seriousness or otherwise of the global slowdown will have an impact and that impact we have largely yet to see.

Wasteful spending clearly needs cutting back in all areas of Government and the savings returned to taxpaying citizens via more tax cuts, this way the economy will be stimulated over and above any initiatives to speed the economy up via Government attached incentives or direct spending by them.

More of what we had from the Labour Party just isn't going to cut the mustard. Economies are best stimulated directly by citizens rather than by bureaucrats or politicians looking to spend taxpayer dosh on their favourite business charity.

Government spending on essential infrastructure is one notable exception.

New power stations, motorways in Auckland-another harbour crossing, a motorway through Mt Albert to finish the city's motorway system-and some decent school buildings would be a good start.

Any continuation of what got us in this mess in the first place will simply drag out out the recession for several years, rather than the likely 18 months or so.

Particular importance should placed on the speed and timing of the building blocks that must be put in place for us to start to grow the economy again.

A quick response is the best response and any impediment to economic development must be put aside so as to assist an economy that could get alot worse.

This means a fast tracking of a relaxing of the Resource Management Act and the immediate rescinding of the Emissions trading scheme, which will hamper economic growth by piling unnecessary cost into the economy when we least need it.

New Zealand finally has an administration that has the expertise to negotiate their way through financial management for the good and bad times.

New Zealand has made a choice by electing a new Government and our elected leaders must make the right economic choices, some of them difficult, in order for us to prosper again, sooner rather than latter.

The alternative is a continued slide down the economic ladder which will be extremely difficult to extricate ourselves from.

Labour dithers while economy is in danger of collapse

The world, and that includes little ole New Zealand is running close to the brink of financial collapse.

The credit crunch, a fallout from the sub prime meltdown has seriously affected global stockmarkets and it is only a matter of time before that seriously impacts our real economy.

Currently The Labour Government, through the lame-arsed mis-management of the economy by Michael Cullen, has us limping through a recession, but it could get worse if action isn't taken, and soon.

The rest of the globe is acting to intervene in this financial crises and over this weekend finance ministers from around the globe have convened in Washington to brainstorm solutions to the problem.

Cullen meanwhile is silent. He seems relaxed in the face of possible economic doom.

For a Government who has been hands on with intervention in the economy for nine years it seems bizarre that they are now hamstrung in the face of possible re-election or indeed just don't care about the serious position the world and New Zealand finds itself in, economically speaking.

For his part Cullen has been all over the place with the state of what has been happening in the United States and has been changing his opinion from day to day as to the seriousness of the situation.

Labour simply need to cut back expenditure on wasteful spending, cut taxes and use whatever spare cash there is to build infrastructure-it would be perfect timing for a new Auckland Habour crossing construction announcement, amongst other stuff.

Instead we get nothing from Labour, zip, zero, zilch, nada, sweet FA.

His only answer so far has been to pass more new taxes and restrict more personal freedoms.

Make no mistake, how this economic crises is attacked by Labour in the next week or so will mean the difference between a reasonably shallow recession for a medium term to a deep recession for a number of years.

Nationals response has been weak as well, but hey they are not on the treasury benches, Mikey boy is and so far he has failed.

Michael Cullen's history on tax cuts comes back to haunt him

Michael Cullen's education as a Dr of History clearly lacked the basic tenant that as history is more often than not written down for posterity it can often come back to haunt the history maker:

"We just don't believe in tax cuts - it's against our fundamental philosophy - after all we are socialists and proud of it".A hardly stunning admission by Michael Cullen a while back but hard to fathom considering his announcement of personal tax cuts in an address to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce today.

Cullen trumpeted 4 billion dollars of tax cuts annually and gave examples as: " working for families, business tax cuts and Kiwisaver.

Of course Working for Families is not a tax cut but welfare, Kiwisaver isn't a tax cut either and business tax cuts were long ago gobbled up by Labour Government imposed business taxes like increased holidays, Kiwisaver contributions and administration, Government imposed energy hikes and a whole range of other taxes too long to list here.

If there are any tax cuts this year or in the following years by Labour, they will be linked to a Government agency and distributed that way not by the usual method of more cash directly in the hand.

Strangely enough, a 66c across the board tax cut was promised in the 2005 budget, coincidently another election year, but Labour broke their promise after reelection because they commented that economic conditions didn't allow such a cut.

Now 3 year latter, and with a crippled stagnant economy tax cuts are going to happen?

The truth is though Labour were and never will deliver proper tax cuts because they are philosophically opposed to them:

"Tax cuts are a path to inequality. They are the promises of a visionless and intellectually bankrupt people".

On the contrary though, tax cuts show true vision and are not only "intellectually enriching" but in the long term they enhance every sector of society, socially and economically.

What is "intellectually bankrupt" though is promising personal tax cuts in election year.

The facts are that any time is a good time for tax cuts. They stimulate business and economies and have an upside long term, not a downside on the tax take by governments, and are especially relevant during the tough economic times we are now going through.

Tax cuts have been affordable since Labour came to office almost 9 long years ago and the excuses used to dodge such cuts have been coming as thick and as fast as Parekura Horomia on speed.

Cullen sites several: "we will have to cut Government services", "tax cuts lead to inflation and higher interest rates", "we will have to borrow money to fund tax cuts".

All clearly bollocks.

What has led to inflation and the highest interest rates in the Western world is reckless Labour Party spending, cut that and you can afford to return stolen taxpayer funds.

Ditto borrowing and government services, cut back Cullen, New Zealanders have, and have had to borrow because of your tax and spend mentality.

Finally, Cullen hinted today that any tax cuts must be "fair" and he clearly meant that those who earn't high salaries, probably wont be getting a tax cut.

Those earning higher salaries don't traditionally vote Labour anyway so they will be left out if there are personal tax cuts, but in an ironic twist, those receiving welfare through "working for families" benefits, mainly middleclass voters who could vote either National or Labour, maybe getting some of the taxes back that they have been paying to fund WFF in the first place!

Cruel but true.

To sum it up Labour's real attitude to tax cuts. Firstly Labour clearly don't believe in them and they truly believe that the high taxes they have imposed are there to "redistribute income".

You certainly can't vote for a party like Labour, The Green Party, The Maori Party, NZ First, Jim Anderton because they all fundamentally agree with Cullen, the Labour Party philosophy on tax cuts and cannot be trusted to deliver as part of a Labour-led Government in 2008.

Vote for either Act or National, they have promised real tax cuts and have done for years.

In the spirit of this season and in the spirit of giving, Political Animal would like to hand out presents for those politicians who went above and beyond the call of duty to single themselves out for attention in 2007.

Lets face it politics is a dirty business, and politics has been especially filthy this year.

It hasn't escaped me this time of year, you creationists out there may have been looking for evidence of Darwin's evolution and modern humans relationship to our cousins the apes, and one doesn't have to look further than Parliament in Wellington to see clearly that some modern humans have failed to evolve and apes they still are.

Man of the year

John Boscowan, for showing opposition to the Electoral Finance Act, putting his money where his mouth was and organising huge opposition to to the fascist, Stalinist, bill that will remove free speech in election year 2008.

His courage and conviction for such a noble cause, in the face of Labour lies and innuendo, where there is usually little courage and no conviction instills pride into myself and others who marched down this countries streets to fight for our rights to have our say.

Boscawan is an individual whose qualities are rarely seen in New Zealand.

He stands above all others.

Disgrace of the year

The passing of the Electoral Finance Bill.

Sue Bradford, former Miss New Zealand and now Green Party member told parliament that her anti smacking bill wasn't introduced to stop parents from smacking their kids lightly to stop them from crossing the road without looking and then when the bill became an act she said this was the kind of scenario that the bill was passed for.

The obvious choice for this is of course Trevor "The Bash" Mallard, for trying to deck Tau Henare in Parliament and then unwisely picking on several women state workers, forgetting of course that his boss is a woman....hmmmmm....oh come on Darren that is a cheap shot.

It just has to be that best dressed clothes horse and Taurangas answer to Don King, the heavyweight boxing promoter, Winston Peters.

There is so much material about Peters in 2007 that puts him in the Wanker of the year category. His intellectual masturbatory "gifting" of $158,000 of taxpayer money to a children's hospital instead of giving it back to those it belongs to defies logic.

We all know Winnie and logic fast became strangers when he confused his balls for baubles in 2005 and decided to take the booty instead of smacking the booty of Clarke and co.

His curious affection for Condi Rice also has tongues wagging in Wellington and closer to home, the marital bed.

Leader of the year

John Key, the Leader of the National opposition party finished the year as the most preferred Prime minister and so did his party, by a country mile. He is a man who's time has come and 2008 could be his year.

Disappointment of the year

Once again John Key, he voted for the piece of crap anti smacking bill and systematically drove a wedge into his major support.

To those of all political parties who continue to support the myth and lie of man made global warming and are heading New Zealand on a path of economic destruction and poverty not seen since the great depression and the poppy rush in Europe 400 odd years ago, for no good reason other than politics, taxation and control.

Fool of the year

Micheal Cullen wins streaks ahead of anyone else for this category.

A collective who is so confused by how economies work he thinks governments can spend taxpayer money and not have an effect on an economy but when individuals and companies spend their own money they do!

October 2011 will see this historian look back on 2008 and see that his tax cuts of that year were too little too late for the economy and also failed to have himself and his mate Helen reelected.

Micheal Cullen, extremely wealthy himself, not that here is anything wrong with that, should be praising those that do well.

Nandor Tanchos and his party the Greens for railing against gambling, smoking, alcohol, fatty and sugary foods while at the same time advocating the use of marijuana and"party pills" .

Defies belief and conscious thought.

Perhaps the Greens were unconscious when taking their stance on the "ills of society".

The New Zealand Herald's stance on the Electoral Finance Act. Never before has any media got it so right.

Disgraceful media stance of the year

Russell Brown, John Campbell, Chris Trotter, Al Gore, Findlay MacDonald, and his wife and their mates from NZ's overwhelmingly leftist media pushing the spin that the left do so well.

Repeat a lie often enough and eventually people will believe it.

Racist of the year

Willie Jackson from Radio Live, who calls himself a "Political Animal", he is right on the last part.

Willie gets off on calling people who disagree with him racist while at the same time peddling something akin to the likes of Mugabe.

Little Willie, as his wife affectionately calls him, is also on the state tit and definitely has a face for radio.

The last but not least category is taken out by none other than our favourite Aunt, Helen Clark.

Helen takes out this years award for loser of the year for one main reason, although there are a myriad of others.

Helen managed to take her party from being ahead in the polls and her as Prime ministerial fave, to sinking any chance that her party might have in the 2008 Elections.

She got it wrong all the way through 2007.

The anti smacking bill, Electoral Finance Bill and the failure to be punished for stealing $800,000.00 of taxpayer money to buy the 2005 election were all black marks against her and her party.

The arrogance and high handedness and the dictatorial nature of her leadership let her down time and time again and even long time Labour supporters are questioning their allegiance to a person who would pass laws to stop free speech and interfere with their lives as individuals.

Wednesday Political Soup: Edition 3

Two Time Loser

Last week saw the Labour Party chief finger wagger Steve Maharey announce that he wasn't going to run for the 2008 Election but take up the offer by Massey University for the position of Vice Chancellor.

He was previously a student, then a lecturer at the University and after nearly 18 years in Parliament has never held a productive job in the private market sector in his life.

A perfect candidate for the Labour Party of course but both Labour and Massey University will be losers. Losers because Labour need an effective smarmy politico to push more nut case lefty social reforms and Massey are big losers because they are lumbered with a collectivist who will want to push the same sorts of "Labour Like" Socialist reforms on campus.

The only winners will be the New Zealand public who no longer have to put up with this control freak who was behind one of this countries biggest attacks on the family, the anti smacking law, that was passed earlier this year.

From the department of silly walks and departmental office of equidistant paper clips comes news this week that Labour wants to outlaw working over 40 hours per week.

That is, not just lowering the working week and allowing workers overtime rates after that but making it illegal to work more than 40 hours!

State worshiper and freedom hater, Labour MP Darien Fenton says, "employees currently work too hard". She says the grind of long hours at the office is, "causing too much stress".

Surely individuals are big enough and ugly enough to decide whether they want to work or not eh Darien?

No, not Ms Fenton, a lifelong union "advocate" and succubus of the working man.

Quite apart from the stupidity of Fenton's idea, the chaos that it would cause employers , employees and the economy would be horrendous and would be vast and far reaching.

Employees would have to apply for state assistance to provide additional income and employers would have to find extra imaginary employees to fill the vacuum left.

It fits the Socialist argument that everyone should be equal though, and that of course extends to income, where Labour's bright idea for a 40 hr week would be yet another tool to achieve that end.

France tried the 35 hr week and it nearly sunk their economy. They are of course now trying to move away from that sort of nonsense.

Tax cuts are on the agenda again this week.

Yes Micheal "Fiscal Drag" Cullen has been making excuses again in Parliament as to why he wont give back the money he has stolen in high taxes to those that earned the money in the first place.

Replace bourgeoisie with middle classes and you get what Cullen and Helen Clark are doing to New Zealand's new proletariat.

Nanny State worshiper Helen Clark is also a disciple of Lenin and seems intent on grinding the masses to a lifeless pulp or until most of them leave to live in Australia.

Cullen and Clark are not about to relinquish the control that they have over the hapless middle class that comes with high taxes.

Any "tax relief" in the grab for control next election year will come in the from of State sanctioned or controlled benefits, like the "working for families" welfare package and bribes that have some sort of State apparatus attached to them for absence of the State means no control over the people:"When there is state there can be no freedom, but when there is freedom there will be no state" Lenin

Almost the end of a Kiwi institution this Guy Fawkes Day when a multitude of restrictions come into use over the sale and restriction of fireworks.

Sure, fireworks are dangerous but they are also fun and the labeling last year by David Benson "Tennis Ball" Pope of Kiwis who like to have a little fun with fireworks as "naughty boys and girls" and if they don't behave public use of fireworks will be made illegal is more than a little over the top when one considers what Mr Pope used to do with school pupils in his days as a teacher in Tauranga.

State sanctioned hand wringing will be De rigour again this year and it is possible that State run firework displays will be sanctioned by the anointed should New Zealand have the misfortune of morons having them elected again in 2008.

Labours Socialist Peril

We are just over a year from probably one of New Zealands most important elections in generations. Important because we currently have a party in power that have us doomed and heading towards a socialist utopia(theirs)that would have Helen Clark and her merry band of brothers and sisters and their Labour Party telling its citizens exactly what they should be doing.

Complete control of New Zealand by an elitist bunch of individuals who have an agenda of turning the "Swedish Model" of socialism that they aspire New Zealand to have into some sort of Stalinist, Maoist, Clarkist, Fascist, South Pacific 1930s Germany.

Some of us have learnt from history how socialism didn't work and we also know from history that socialism will never work in the present or is good for our countries future. Micheal Cullen, the Dr of History, should take on board the lessons that his craft has taught him. If you ignore history you are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of an idea, thought or in Labour's case their socialist agenda, that clearly makes that idea a redundant one. Are you listening Micheal!

Let us canvas briefly Labours last 8 years in office. We must all continue to be reminded as to what this group of angry, vindictive, nasty individuals have foisted on New Zealand and some of the crimes against our freedoms that have been imposed upon us.

Without a doubt the biggest blot on our countries freedom has been the rights of parents and their right to parent as they see fit.

Removal of the right of a parent to smack a child if he puts himself in danger or the parent has no other recourse for punishment would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Like Labour's removal of physical punishment in schools during the 1980s, sensible practical people all know where this has led schools to in the present day. Pupils now run classes and are allowed to swear, be unruly and hit teachers and pupils without consequence. Removal of the threat of physical punishment in schools has led to more violence, not less as the left would have you believe.

The same reason has been given for the removal of the rights of a parent to lightly smack a child, that is, to prevent violence. If you learn from history and common sense we all know that is going to happen. Learn from history Labour.

The nanny state has also been busy telling us what we should eat, drink, smoke ,say and think and at the same time using taxpayers money in a Stalinist way to "educate" the masses, using TV, Newspapers and other media to brainwash Kiwis into thinking that the bizarre is normal. It wont be long before the government is running supermarkets and pumping gas!!

The attack on the Family through legislation to make same sex "marriage" normal for homosexuals and lesbians is part of the sustained attack by Labour's "Rainbow Youth" section and the continued striving by them to make Government mandated same sex relationships a legitimate thing. Us Heteros don't want Government meddling in our relationships why would the queer folk want the same?

The legitimisation of prostitution by Labour legislation its no surprise. Minister Phil Goff's proposal that the age of consent be brought down to 12 gives the public an idea as to what Phil and his comrades have in store for us should they continue to hold the reins of power going forward.

The loose morals and low standards of Labour's leader, Helen Clarke, have not only pervaded its parties policies and law making but have clearly been evident in Clarke's colleagues actions and attitudes.

From the top down we can see a litany of lies, deceit and subterfuge not seen since Richard Nixon took office in the United States.

Helen Clarke has been caught out lying several times; falsely signing paintings, professing not to know what was happening around her as her Ministerial car sped through a 50KM zone at 170KM(yeah right!)so she could get to a Rugby game and a long list of other fibs and spins including the stealing of 850,000 dollars of taxpayer money to buy the 2005 election and then the passing of a law under urgency to legitimise this theft. Something tricky dicky would be proud of and incidentally something he was impeached and sacked for.

We had drop kick lefties like Chris Trotter coming out in their newspaper columns saying that the theft was legitimate and if the means to this end was to deny National its place in Government, theft and lying was acceptable.

Clarke's Minister David Benson Pope has been caught out lying twice, that we know of. He lied to Parliament twice during the great tennis ball incident and the recent case of the sacking by him of Madeline Setchel, then repeated the lies to media.

We also had the case just before the 2005 election of Phillip Field, where there is clear evidence he has been found to be taking bribes from his electorate and using slave Labour in Samoa to get houses he owns renovated. This was apparent before the 2005 election but our largely leftist mainstream media were more interested in the non-story of National and the money coming from a religious group.

Chris Trotter and his media ilk ignored the cover-up of the Phillip Field scandal because if Field had lost his electorate of Mangere then Labour would have been outski in 2005. David Lange would be spinning in his grave!!

We also had one of Clarke's Ministers caught drunk behind the wheel while Minister for ACC and a Minister who was illegitimately claiming expenses for living in taxpayer funded accommodation and a long, long list of other sleaze, spin and lies too long to list in this brief article.

Let us not forget the mishandling of our economy my Micheal Cullen and his social misfits. During a time when all economic factors conspired to give us the best economic conditions we have had in generations the best the economy could do was 3.5% growth.

Cullen has squandered that growth by taxing the life out of its citizens ,while at the same time on such a reckless Government spending spree that bureaucrats have increased by more that 30% in 8 years.

Dr Cullen has milked the middleclases of its hard earned wealth filtered it through Government lackeys and "given" it back through Welfare benefits, through "Working for Families" and other nutcase socialist schemes. Never before in our history have New Zealanders had so many people reliant on the State(other taxpayers)through welfare.

Probably the epitome of ridiculousness was the 2005 election bribe of free student loans. Dr Cullen's theory that if there is no interest on student loans and that students therefore will pay back loans quicker defies even the logic of a sane man. This collective individual (an oxymoron if I ever heard one)is in charge of the taxpayers purse strings. Remember though he is going to have another go at bribing you again with your own money in 2008.

Cullen's high taxes, amongst the highest in the world, is clearly killing the economy. Not only are his high taxes and proliferate spending putting a nail through business and productivity but they have given rise to the highest interest rates in the developed world. Our dairy farmers have little to do with the rising dollar, it has more to do with Dr Cullen's out of control spend and tax regime. Socialism at work!!

Now I could continue to trot out acre after acre of prose about the nasty, vindictive, morally corrupt lot that call themselves our leaders but I want to leave that up to you to comment on. For or against.
